Types of fire extinguishers

There are several types of fire extinguisher and it is as important that the user understands the differences as much as it is that the extinguisher supplier does. Usually though the decision on what type or class of extinguisher should be used is determined after carrying out a mandatory fire risk assessment.
The fire safety act (FSO Fire Safety, regulatory reform, Order 2005) dictates that all UK businesses carry out a fire risk assessment. When a business has five employees or more the assessment must be a written one.
One area of the assessment will deal with provision of fire safety measures. Firstly the decision would be, “Are extinguishers required?”- Most often the answer is yes. Having decided that extinguishers are required then specifying the right types relative to the fuels in a building is key, also the numbers in relation to travel distances and floor area etc.
Once in situ then anybody who is authorised to use them must receive fire extinguisher training which would deal with, amongst other topics, the various types of extinguishers.
Below is a graphic explaining the various types and which type of fire they can be used on.
Remember however there is more than one way to skin a cat. The combination of extinguishers may vary from designer to designer but what is important is that they are commensurate with the risk from the fuels in the building.
